The animated film The Ogglies Welcome to Smelliville introduces the audience to the Ogglies, a quirky family of friendly, green creatures with an unusual diet: they love to eat garbage. Initially, the Ogglies are homeless and in search of a new place to settle down. Their journey leads them to the seemingly idyllic town of Smelliville.
However, the town has a massive, pungent problem: a colossal garbage dump on its outskirts that is a complete eyesore and a major deterrent to tourism. Fortunately for the Ogglies, this dump is their idea of paradise and they quickly make it their new home. Meanwhile, the town’s Mayor and his ambitious, germophobic wife, the Lady Mayoress, are desperate to eliminate the stench and improve their town’s image.
Consequently, the Ogglies’ happy new home is immediately put in jeopardy. Nevertheless, hope arrives in the form of Max, the Mayor’s inventive son, and his best friend, Lotta. Max, first hoping to solve the smell problem with his own wacky inventions, soon discovers the good-natured Ogglies. Therefore, he quickly realises that their garbage-eating habits are the perfect, sustainable solution to Smelliville’s waste issue.
Working together, Max, Lotta, and the Oggly children formulate a daring plan to protect the dump from Mr Hammer’s destructive machinery and expose his villainous plot to the town. Throughout their adventure, the children must often sneak around and use their wits to outsmart the adults. Ultimately, the film promotes strong messages of environmentalism (specifically recycling and waste management), acceptance of those who are different, and the danger of unchecked capitalism.
